As Shop Manager of Carnegie Mellon Racing, it's my joy and responsibility to ensure that our manufacturing spaces are organized and safe at all times. Due to a multitude of new equipment arriving periodically during the 2023-24 academic school year, I felt it necessary to create a virtual and fully adjustable layout of our main two shops so that the areas could be rearranged to make space for the new equipment.

The first task was to get an accurate scan of the entire space which I was able to accomplish using Polycam (a Lidar scanning app) on my iPhone. From there, I used a tape measure to find the dimensions of every major object in each shop. I then used the recorded measurements of the space from the Polycam file as well as my own personal observations to construct a Solidworks model for each shop. These files now allow us as a team to better plan for future shop adjustments and have a better understanding of our spaces as a whole.
