Eagle Scout Project
Boy Scouts of America Troop 454
Spring 2019
I started Cub Scouts at Pack 39 in 2009 in Kindergarten and crossed over to Boy Scouts at Troop 454 in 2015. One of the major accomplishments that you can achieve in Boy Scouts, now Scouts BSA, is the Eagle Scout rank. In addition to years of learning, leadership, and service you must also complete an Eagle Scout project where you provide a service to a local organization in need.

At my old elementary school Bridge Point Elementary School I found I always enjoyed our outdoor walking trail, however, since I'd left they had the students use the new recess playground much more than the trail which left it deshveled and in ruin. I wanted to make sure that new students would be able to enjoy it as I did so I talked with the school about renovating it by adding new mulch to old runoff paths and instructional signs to the equipment on the trails so that students would be safe when using them. They agreed and also provided a budget for the mulch and the signs.

I contacted Stokes Sign Company and designed instructional pictures for each piece of equipment. They printed the signs and provided me with the materials to construct them on the day. I then provided an estimate for how much mulch we would need to safely fill in the old spots.

I then advertised my project to my troop for the next few months, on the day we provided breakfast and lunch and had around 30 or so scouts and adult volunteers help weed, trim branches, lay weed blockers, lay mulch, and place signs. Afterward, we completed the renovation with some mulch leftover that the school said would be okay to leave nearby in case the areas need more of it later.

I've followed up with the school since then and they've been sending more classes there periodically to enjoy the trail since its renovation. I have been down there a few times myself and can still enjoy the trail as I did when I was a kid.
